Cinematography Influences and techniques

For my music video i wanted my camera shots to be smooth and on focus but i also wanted them to work with the lyrics. i have found many influencial trailers and clips on the internet that has wondeful cinematography in them which i would like to replicate. Such as zooms, pans, tracks etc.

Videos that have influenced my cinematography are :

These have shots and tracks that i intend to use in my music video, this is because they interest me and they would work with the lyrics of the song i chose. My song is quite a steady paced video but at times can be very higly paced and i need to be able to switch from one to another immediately but with grace because i dont just want the shot to go from slow and change instantly to a fast paced shot i want it to flow and move with the lyrics. My video will include the artist lip syncing in parts and i want those shots to have a different feel to it compared to the narrative but i also want the main artist to be in the narrative so i do want them to link but the feel of the narrative and the artist need to be different in comparison.

The shots i am going to test are:

Pan (90°,180°,360°)
Tilt
Zoom in/ Out
Track
High angle/ Low angle
Establishing shots
Two shots
Group Shots
Close Ups
Medium Close Ups
Long Shots
Depth of Field

I will do test shots of all of these using my intended cast and i will see what works and what does not work. I will try umerous shots that i want to be in my video to see if certain ones are doable or wether im just being eccentric and want the impossible. My lip syncing shots will have a lot more movement in the camera work because the artist is upbeat and singning a happy song whereas the narrative has joy and regret so it will still have movement but that movement will have emotion to make it stronger and relatable to the audience. I will also be choreographing my own dance for the music video. This will be worked on towards the filming of the music video and changes may be still made when actually filming the video.

Recycled Styles

Oasis - The importance of being idle

This was a copy of the style of the film - Saturday night and Sunday morning (1960) by Karel Reisz

Oasis was creating the first Britsh social realism video which was about showing the higher class as comedic or not. They tried to show the movement realistically. In the film it copied the classes was clearly shown.

working = bicycle
higher = motorbike

Surface with substance = Looks good but means little

Andrew Goodwin (1992)

Narratives relations are highly complex and meaning can be created from the individual audio-viewers personal musical taste to sophicated intertexually that use multidiscursive phenomena of Western culture.

Videos are different for every person because of their backgrounds, sexuality, gender etc.

Pastiche = copying

Narrative Change and Locations, Costumes etc.

The start of the video is the ending of the video and this will be repeated throughout the video as flashback/premonitions for the main female. The main man is wanting to propose to the woman and intends to ask her at her work. As we see the woman on her way to work we start to understand that she is having an affair with another man. We see this unfold throughout the video. At the same time we see the main man getting ready to propose. When he gets to her work she isnt there so he goes to where he was told she went and sees her kissing another man. He walks out holding the ring and doesnt see or hear the car that is coming and it hits him. The female hears this and runs out to see what it was and she sees her boyfriend lying dead on the floor. She then sees the ring.

Convention Following (This will be added to as the year progresses)

Media skill development essay

When making my magazine I was aware I had to keep to certain codes and conventions that previous real magazines followed to make my product realistic and just like a real pop magazine. the front cover was very interesting because there had to be main image and slogans ect. I was very good at following these conventions I chose to make sure it worked well whilst following the conventions that was expected. The most important one was making sure the look of the magazine  followed through the pages I was creating. The colours have to keep the same and the images have to be seen throughout the magazine. Especially the cover photo artist. I had to make sure the main artists had the correct mise-en-scene for the genre I had chosen. The conventions was followed by me but is didn't really know what they was at the start of the course and by the end of the course I was following them to the letter because if I wanted my magazine to look the best it could It has to follow them the best I could.

Post Production (This will be added to as the year progresses)

Creativity (This will be added to as the year progresses)

Media skill development essay

In terms of creativity I studied art at school for several years so I had a creative flare for arranging things and making sure colours matched or where photos should go on the magazine. My knowledge I already had helped with keeping to the conventions of magazines for example I knew that I wanted pink on my front cover and so it would have to be on the other pages also but instead of just using pink I used colours that worked well with it such as reds and yellows. As the course progressed it did give me further skills in creativity. I learnt how to use a camera in creative ways to make shots look extremely pleasing for the magazine. I also learnt how to position things in places that worked and followed the conventions of my chosen genre. I knew that camera shots varied but I had no idea of the actual names of them. For example I found that medium close ups and extreme close ups was very helpful for my music magazine.

Planning and research (This will be added to as the year progresses)

Media skill development essay

My research and planning is clearly my weakest skill in terms of as media. This is clear because I hadn't really had the skill to do good research and planning it's not something I like to do, I much prefer to go straight into making and creating the product. I learnt to use this before jumping straight in but I still found it extremely hard to make sure my planning and research was correct for blogger so I could get the marks. I knew how to research for my product but I found it particularly hard because I did not know if I was looking at the correct stuff or if it was appropriate for my magazine as I hadn't done planning or media the subject itself before. I had help from my teachers on what to put onto my blogger but I still struggled with the planning and research for my magazine. It is by far the area I would like to improve massively in my second year because it let me down greatly in my first year but I did learn how to plan and research which is a great advance in my skills because I never even used to attempt it before because I just thought it was a waste of time. But it was needed for the course so I adapted and I did understand how to plan and research properly by the end of the year.

Digital Technology (This will be added to as the year progresses)

Media skill development essay

Before I started the media course I had basic digital technology skills but I had never used photo shop before. I knew the general idea of Photoshop but the perfume advert and college magazine was what set my skills on Photoshop in stone. I learnt to use the main tools such as cut and smudge. I became quite skilled at changing the colour of certain areas of images. The images I used was taken on a digital camera which I hadn't really used before this task, I knew how to work it but I did not know what any of the other buttons did or how to take certain shots. Blogger was also something I had never used before but I learnt how to use it very quickly, it was very easy to understand and it was essential for the coursework of my course. I found it very helpful seeing how many people had viewed certain posts. I particularly liked that I could update posts as I went along in the course, this helped me develop my posts as I went along in the year because I was learning more about the technology I was using.
